How about Mental Attitude?

I was not thinking about anything mechanical, just visualizing the ball going in the hole! PGA professionals often express this state of mind as “being in the zone”.

Before every round of golf, recite, “I’m good enough, smart enough, and dog-gone-it people like me.” The Powers of positive thinking can do wonders to your golf game! (don’t forget the mirror). This train of thought also helps overcome the first tee jitters.

What do you recommend for food when you play a full day of golf?

Stay away from candy, caffeine, and alcohol. Drink plenty of water. For a light snack and a bit of energy, pretzels, granola, or fruit are great!

What are the golfing faux pas? And do you have any playing advice?

Never Cheat! Make sure you know the rules of golf AND always add your score correctly. NEVER cheat on the golf course!!

Another important etiquette reminder for new golfers is “ready play”. – Be ready to hit when it’s your turn. Use your time wisely. Lining up putts or making club selections should be done while other players prepare for their turn to hit.

Always THINK about your next shot while walking down the fairway to your ball. You should be thinking… “yardage to the hole”, wind direction, “what club should I use?” trajectory … “how high or low should I hit the ball?” and pin placement … “is the pin in the front or back of green?”

Also consider where the most “forgiving” area of that particular hole lies. In case you miss-hit your intended shot, you want to make sure you miss it on the “safe” side. The “safe side” is the area around the green where it’s most likely that you can get the ball up on the green and in the hole with the fewest amount of strokes.

Always be conscientious of other players. Try to stand still when they are hitting and refrain from quoting your favorite Caddy Shack lines on their back swing.

Finally and most important if you hit an errant shot and it’s heading (like and Iraqi scud missile) in the direction of innocent civilians, yell FORE!!!
