Healthy Eating Heart Smart Shopping

29Jun

Grocery shelves can be a minefield of sodium, fat and calories. Follow some of these smart shopping strategies to help you navigate the aisles:
Keep an ongoing list as you run out of healthy foods. Take a shortcut by creating a “master” shopping list that you can photocopy and check off items as you need them.

Plan meals for the week so you’re sure to have all the ingredients on the list.
Don’t go shopping when you’re hungry or you’ll be tempted to buy calorie-rich snack foods.
Buy seasonal vegetables and fruits which are tastier and less expensive. Find out more about filling your crisper.
Read all nutrition labels and ingredient lists before buying packaged foods. Look for products with the Health Check™ symbol.

Map it out – start off with the produce section, where you should make the most purchases. Outside aisles often contain the most nutrition-packed basics; the middle ones are where you’ll find more label and ingredient list reading required. And if you find the snack food aisle tempting, skip it altogether.
