Desire and Drive

3Feb

Does a man’s sexual drive decrease after the age of 25? What if he’s overweight?

Both male and female sexual drives decrease with aging — although, as with all human developmental processes, it’s impossible to pin specific behaviors to exact chronological milestones.

You may be experiencing fewer spontaneous erections and wet dreams than you did during the raging hormone tempests of your adolescent years, and perhaps masturbating less often. But you’re still producing plenty o’ testosterone (unless you have a medical reason to believe otherwise), and men frequently enjoy active sex lives well into their 70s and 80s.

But sexual drive is not quite synonymous with libido or sexual desire, which is based on factors more behavioral than strictly instinctual. Desire is fired — and jinxed — by imagination. If you perceive yourself as undesirable, chances are you will not allow yourself to feel desire. If your extra pounds factor into low self-esteem, then this is a problem you should deal with. But this is not a sexual problem per se.
